If you read the dev blog, you'd see they tried to speed up missles: Those sort of speeds caused the engine to collapse.
Realism is nice, but do you know how unfeasible nanoships are in reality? In space, there is no friction. (Well, minimal, on the scale of a few hydrogen atoms per cubic meter. Negligible for these practical scales.). You can't just dip your wings and turn around like ships in EVE do. There is no "Turning a corner", preserving your velocity and changing direction.
Instead, to turn a ship, you'd have to decelerate completely, then start from 0 m/s in the opposite direction. Of course, a sideways thrust in addition could prevent you from "stopping" relatively, but you'd still "stop" motion in your original dimension.
Also, having some ships with a higher top speed than others fails in the first place: Really, a Titan could get to speeds Intys in EVE don't touch, they'd just have a hell of a time changing directions.
tl;dr version: With the weapons available and the relative fragility of ships, speed would be the ultimate defense if the game was realistic. Speed and range. But the maneuvering would not be nearly so simply, especially in terms of flying circles around someone.
Also, it's a game, not a simulation.. the physics are like flying through oil, not vacuum. It'd be very nice if the physics were realistic, and acceleration was the only important "speed", rather than arbitrary top speeds.. but, in the context of the game, Nanos simply don't work properly.
I've said plenty of times though, the nano nerf was a bit excessive.. whether or not it's for the best, who knows. Those HACs should still be useful after the patch, nano or otherwise, though... most likely a less cookie cutter setup and role.
